In the nineteenth century in the United Kingdom, a long-form drawn out publication came about known for parsing out sensational stories about detectives, criminals, murder, mystery, and the paranormal or supernatural beings. The stories were available for purchase for a penny, episodic, only one portion of the story each week. Penny Dreadful was considered a pejorative for the stories, they were widely considered to be distasteful in spite of their popularity. I chose the name xPrettyDreadfulx because dreadlocks have been a popular hairstyle in many cultures throughout history, however they have also been used as justification for discrimination and rejection in spite of their beauty, the skill and patience required to create them, and the deeply personal meaning they have for their wearers.
